As i counted to read , the story became more surprising , and enthusiastic. After a safe stay in London, the conditions eventually go back to the way they were , back to the bombings , except worse. Hilda doesn't want to take the risk of staying there.Gertie appears again in the story, she offers them a place in Hampshire.Although Hilda doesn't feel like listening to Gertie is the right choice, she agrees anyways since she has no other choice.Later on , Mabel, along with Billy , follows Hilda to the cottage in Hampshire.At the beginning , unlike Ellen, Billy doesn't like living there, but he eventually becomes politer and more decent and starts to love live there with all the horses.Some time later, surprisingly , it turns out that Doug is alive. Doug comes for a visit , bringing happiness to Hilda after all she went through.The old woman's vision turns out to be true , and Ellen becomes curious.Ellen , along with her friend Sheila, visit a stone reader As time goes on , Ellen realizes that she has feelings towards Billy , but Billy was too busy to give her any attention since all his attention was given to the horses.We come to see that Hilda is very over protective towards Ellen , and is convinced that Ellen shouldn't be talked to about many things , while Mabel thinks Ellen is old enough to know about everything. Billy starts to spend a lot of time with Sheila , and this causes a conflict between the tw friends.Later on , Sheila and Ellen become friends again.Sheila tells Ellen about lovemaking.As we continue to read , we are informed that Mabel's husband is injured , so she hurries back to London to see if he's alright.Ellen becomes devastated because of Billy's departure but at the same time she's glad that Sheila won't see him anymore.Finally , Europe wins , Ellen and her father are ready to move back to London but Hilda believed that London brought her bad luck . Ellen was excited about seeing Billy again , and knowing that Sheila wouldn't be able to contact him made her even happier. As the family finally moves back to London , Ellen realizes that its even worse than before, and she barely even get to see Billy . Billy wants to move back to Hampshire and therefore he keeps arguing with his parents until they give up and decide to move him to Hampshire, which is bad news for Ellen. Doug has back problems , but yet hides them for Hilda . Hilda decides to get a job whether her husband likes it or not , and Ellen is still curious about the old woman's stone reading.We also come to notice that Percy,Billy's older brother, has feelings towards Ellen. Later on , Gertie comes for a visit and sees the horrible condition they are living in.
